The digital sector, while essential, carries a significant environmental footprint comparable to the aviation industry. This impact stems from the energy-intensive processes involved in device manufacturing, powering data centers, and maintaining network infrastructure.
While advancements in digital technologies like the Internet of Things, robotics, and artificial intelligence offer promising solutions for climate change monitoring, energy optimization, and the adoption of low-emission technologies, the digitization process itself presents significant environmental challenges. These challenges include substantial greenhouse gas emissions, increased energy and water consumption, and a growing volume of electronic waste.
Greening the digital sector, therefore, is crucial and requires a multi-faceted approach: transitioning to renewable energy sources, dramatically improving energy efficiency in devices and operations, and embracing sustainable practices like responsible e-waste management.
This webinar focuses on the findings of the World Benchmarking Alliance and the International Telecommunications Union Report “Greening Digital Companies. Monitoring Emissions and Climate Commitments”.
